Tips to Make Your Swamp Cooler Colder and More Efficient

Builder’s Heating & Air Conditioning has talked many times about the energy-saving advantages of evaporative coolers or swamp coolers. They use much less electricity than air conditioners. We’ve also been very honest about their shortcomings. On hot and humid days, they may not make your home as comfortable as you would like. High humidity is generally speaking not a big factor on the Front Range but there are exceptions. Here are some tips to help keep your Denver, CO home or business cooler using a swamp cooler.

Open the windows

You have to unlearn some of the lessons related to air conditioners. They are more efficient in a sealed environment.  Swamp coolers do best with a constant supply of fresh air. Keep a few windows cracked an inch or two. This will allow dry air in and damp air out.

Proper maintenance

A swamp cooler is no different than any other appliance. It runs most efficiently when it’s properly cleaned and maintained. During the cooling season make sure to follow our swamp cooler maintenance checklist:

  • Wipe down the exterior
  • Vacuum air intake grills and fans
  • Wash out the water tank with a mild soap and water solution
  • Inspect cooling pads for cracks or mildew, replacing as needed
